Hometown Heroes - AFL East

Updated at Apr 26, 2024

The AFL East is full of talent. Get to know some of the league's best!

With just a few days remaining until the kickoff of the 2024 AFL season, let’s focus on the East Division and find some storylines. Which players will be playing close to home? Let’s find out.

Jake Molinich - Albany Firebirds

Jake Molinich is no stranger to the New York area. He grew up in Pittsford, New York, and went to the University at Buffalo. At Buffalo, Molinich was mostly used as a blocking tight end.

He appeared in 57 games over five seasons and will be making his professional football debut with the Firebirds. Molinich played linebacker and fullback in high school, so he should have no problem transitioning back to these positions.

Arthur Hobbs - Albany Firebirds

Hobbs did not grow up in the Albany area or go to college in New York, but this is not the first time he’s called Albany home. Coming out of Nebraska–Kearney, Hobbs was signed by the San Diego Chargers in 2012.

After bouncing around in the CFL and AFL, Hobbs landed on his feet in Albany for the first time in 2018. After a brief stint with the Atlantic City Blackjacks, Hobbs made his way back to Albany, this time in the NAL, from 2021-2022. The Firebirds are happy to have the veteran DB back in Albany.

Isaiah Hall - Minnesota Myth

Isaiah Hall is Minnesota through and through. Growing up in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Hall’s peers quickly saw his athletic ability. He spent his first three collegiate seasons at Winona State University, where he was chosen Division II Honorable Mention All-American and All-Region. He transferred to the University of St. Thomas, citing his love for the community as a reason for the move.

He quickly established himself as a threat anytime he touched the ball. Hall is a defensive back by trade but also returned punts and kicks and got some run on offense as a receiver and running back. It’s safe to say Hall will be a problem wherever he lines up for the Myth!

Shedrick Kirk - Nashville Kats

Shedrick Kirk is yet another defensive back you should keep your eye on ahead of the 2024 AFL season. Kirk grew up in Nashville, Tennessee, and attended McGavock High School. In college, he was a standout at Kentucky Wesleyan College, where he was known for his elite speed and ball skills.

He finished his collegiate career with 82 total tackles, 20 passes deflected, and 6 interceptions, 5 of which came in his senior season. He even has some professional football experience, playing for the Pittsburgh Maulers of the USFL.
